Defence for Children International (DCI) is a worldwide movement founded in 1979 (the first International Year of the Child). Through the action of its nearly 40 national sections, the organisation focuses on the promotion and protection of children’s rights at the local, national, regional and international levels. Since its creation, DCI has actively contributed to protecting children’s rights throughout the world with a specific attention on ensuring the implementation of a justice system adapted to children.

Goals

Our aim is to ensure practical, systematic and concerted actions towards the effective implementation of the human rights of children codified in the UNCRC and other international standards.

Activities

Migrant children : DCI aims to help migrant chidren by : reporting violations of their rights; making specific recommendations; ensuring that child protection systems are non-discriminatory and can effectively protect or guarantee children’s right; suing the Belgian authorities each time they take measures threatening to deprive children of their rightful liberties. Justice for children : DCI aims to improve the juvenile justice system by: making it more child-friendly; encouraging education over punishment; formulating recommendations, providing training to individuals denouncing, children’s rights violations and taking legal actions if laws or practices contradict international standards Lobby, advocacy, Human rights and children's rights education, ...
